Chapter Fourteen
âIâM SO SORRY.â HORROR was settling across Ashâs face. âIf Iâd thought for a second heâd do something like this... to so many people...â
Sympathy pinged inside Victoria. âThen what? Youâd have done things differently? Not given us the building?â
âI donât know. Something, I guess. Iâm still sorry.â
âHe could have been a grown man about the entire thing and walked away. Like a normal person would. Itâs not your fault.â It was a sweet sentiment though.
Ash twisted her mouth. âI know. Iâm working on the whole not taking blame for other people thing. I still feel bad, though.â
âMe too. But in a way I hope itâs true. That would mean there may not be anything that triggered the investigation beyond someoneâs word, and we donât have anything to worry about.â Except the possibility that someone had forgotten to dot an I or cross a T somewhere.
They finished lunch, chatting about the weather, how hard it was to get back into work after the holidays, and other random small talk. Victoriaâs mind whirred over the information about Ralph Wolfram. If it was true, how would they figure it out, and even then, what recourse did they have besides proving everything was on the up-and-up?
She said goodbye to Ash outside the deli. As the other woman walked toward her car, Victoria called Tristan.
âYou done monopolizing my personâs time?â His greeting was light, despite the words.
She bit the inside of her cheek, but it didnât stop a pleasant shiver from racing down her spine at his voice. How did he have that effect on her? âFor now. Thank you for sending her.â
âShe volunteered, or I would have done it myself.â
Victoria leaned against a nearby building, keeping her out of the way of traffic. She should get back to work too, but she wanted to enjoy the conversation. âIâm a little torn it worked out that way, but good things came out of it.â
âDid you gossip about how snowboarders are sexier than skateboarders?â he teased.
The playfulness sent a thrill through her. It tickled her heart and glided through her veins. âIâll have to ask her about that next time. I have a feeling her answer is different than mine.â
âYouâd be surprised.â
âNow I have to know.â
Tristan made a tsk sound. âNot my secret to share. Ask Ash.â
âSpoil sport. Tell me another secret instead then. One that is yours.â The playful words pinged inside, reminding her she might not like the answer.
There was a pause, that made her glee wilt.
âHow do you feel about the name Alexandria?â he asked.
âI... Itâs pretty? Itâs got a lot of potential for cute nicknames. It sounds almost regal. Why?â
âIâve always said if I had a girl, thatâs what Iâd name her.â
Such a simple statement, but it carried so much weight. He had names picked out. When he said heâd always wanted to be a family man, she lost the importance of it in the midst of her hurt. Victoria must be grinning like an idiot by now. âIâll add it to the list.
